The Fredericton District Soccer Association (FDSA) is a non-profit soccer club in Fredericton, NB. Our mission is to provide all players in our community with the opportunity to reach their full potential as people and soccer players through the most rewarding and enjoyable soccer experience.

Position Overview

FDSA is seeking a qualified individual for the temporary position of Project Coordinator. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Project Coordinator is responsible for a specific set of deliverables related to volunteer recruitment and retention. This position will be on a contract basis, and is funded by the Government of Canada through the Community Services Recovery Fund.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducting research to gain a strong understanding of the volunteer landscape within Canadian non-profit sport, including the challenges of and best practices for recruitment and retention.
  • Developing an evidence-based plan/strategy for recruitment and retention of volunteers, with a particular focus on volunteer coaches and committee members.
  • Implementing a system for tracking retention year over year.
  • Conducting initial recruitment of volunteer coaches for the 2024 season.
  • Producing and implementing the first stages of a recruitment strategy for committee members within the new governance model of the organization.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, not for profit management, sport administration, or a related management field.
  • Experience working with a non-profit organization and/or an understanding of the realities of the pressures and pain points of a volunteer-driven organization.
  • Ability to conduct research, formulate recommendations, and design and implement programs.

Essential Skills

  • Communicating Effectively: Speak, listen, and write in a clear, thorough, and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques.
  • Planning and Organizing: Determine strategies to achieve the deliverables of the project and align with the overall goals of the organization. 
  • Solving Problems/Resolving Issues: Assess problem situations, identify root cause, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations or decisions to move forward promptly.
  • Mission and Values: Highly ethical character with personal integrity; passionate about FDSA’s mission and ability to live the organization’s values.

Details

Working Conditions

  • Office-based position, with remote/hybrid option available
  • Temporary contract position with some flexibility on hours
    • A total of 400 hours to be worked between January 22nd to May 3rd, 2024


Compensation

The successful candidate will be paid on an hourly basis at a rate of $17.00 per hour.

New Executive Director – Joe Hamilton

We are pleased to announce Joe Hamilton as our new Executive Director. Over the last six years since moving from England to Fredericton, Joe has held 5 separate positions within the club in various capacities: Winter Programming Head Coach (2018-2021), Youth Coordinator (2019), U17 Boys Head Coach (2021), Summer Academy Coach (2023), and Game Model Consultant (2023). Joe is also a former Captain of the UNB Reds Men’s Soccer Team, where he was recognized as a 2x AUS All Star and Usport All Rookie Team during his playing career. For the last two years, Joe has transitioned into a coaching role with the team while pursuing a CONCACAF B-license coaching certification. He also assumed the role of Head Coach of Picaroons Men’s Soccer team during the 2023 summer season, where the team won the NBPSL & Challenge Cup Championships.

Joe’s last professional role saw him working as a Performance Analyst for the Canadian Men’s National Team from 2021-2023. In this role, Joe was heavily involved in the historic 2022 World Cup Qualifying Campaign, which saw Canada qualify for the Men’s World Cup for only the second time in the country’s history. Joe traveled to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with the team as a Performance Analyst.

We are thrilled to have Joe on board. With his unique experiences locally, nationally, and internationally, we are excited to have him join the FDSA Team.

FDSA is seeking an Executive Director

The Fredericton District Soccer Association (FDSA) is a non-profit soccer club in Fredericton, NB. Our mission is to provide all players in our community with the opportunity to reach their full potential as people and soccer players through the most rewarding and enjoyable soccer experience.

Position Overview

FDSA is seeking a qualified individual for the full-time, permanent position of Executive Director. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for implementing the club’s long-term goals and making consistent and timely progress to achieve the club’s mission, fulfill its strategic plan, and meet its financial objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Supporting the long- and short-term objectives of the FDSA with the support of the Board of Directors and technical staff.
  • Facilitating and developing committees, and assisting in organization, monitoring activities, and ensuring effective transition between years.
  • Reporting to the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors in regular meetings; coordinating and overseeing Board meetings and other committee meetings.
    • The ED will be ex-officio, non-voting member of the Board.
  • Leading, managing, and mentoring all full-time and part-time staff. 
  • Establishing and maintaining positive and effective relationships with sponsors, partner organizations, local political and community leaders, and allied educational and youth sports organizations to serve program participants more effectively.
  • Ensuring a constant focus on customer satisfaction and prompt issue resolution.
  • Continuing to grow and expand membership with emphasis on our mission and values, and expanding and adapting programs based on staff, member, and player feedback.

Operations

  • Effectively managing Club expenditures and ensuring appropriate financial controls are in place to support the Club’s financial management goals.
  • Overseeing the management of the office including the inventory and online store.
  • Overseeing the purchasing, receiving, storage and control of all equipment and supplies.
  • Working with technical staff to develop and oversee policies and procedures for coaches, team managers, and players.
  • Coordinating activities to leverage existing volunteer resources to achieve club mission and goals and actively recruit committee members and volunteers where needed.
  • Managing externally facing communications, including social media channels, website, newsletters, and directed mail campaigns.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, not for profit management, sport administration, or a related management field.
  • Experience with business (preferably not for profit sport) leadership, including:
    • Formulating and executing a fiscal budget and multi-year financial plan.
    • Developing organizational cohesion and an effective team.
  • Strong leadership and management skills that include the following:
    • Experience working with a Board of Directors.
    • Excellent verbal, phone, and written communication skills.

Asset

  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Experience working for a similar soccer entity (community or professional club, provincial organization, university/college program, etc.).
  • Bilingualism.

Essential Skills

  • Adaptability: Demonstrate a willingness to be flexible, versatile and tolerant in a changing work environment while maintaining effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Relationship Building: Proven leader of people who can establish and maintain positive working relationships with Club families/customers, staff, board members, sponsors, local community and Government.
  • Communicating Effectively: Speak, listen and write in a clear, thorough and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques. Effective interpersonal, networking and marketing skills; proven experience leveraging in person, online, social media, and other communications to advance Club’s position.
  • Leading People: Success in recruiting, developing, managing, and retaining volunteers and staff. A collaborative leadership style that inspires and motivates staff as well as Club members.
  • Planning and Organizing: Determine strategies to move the organization forward, set goals, create and implement action plans, evaluate processes and results. 
  • Solving Problems/Resolving Issues: Quickly handle member complaints and issues, league/coach/referee issues by involving the appropriate staff or process to assess problem situations, identify root cause, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations or decisions to move forward promptly.
  • Thinking Strategically: Ability to think strategically and translate strategic goals and requirements into quantifiable annual plans and collaborate on opportunities presented to partner for program or programming expansion.
  • Mission and Values: Highly ethical character with personal integrity. Be passionate about FDSA’s mission and live the values, ensuring they are consistently present throughout the Club’s programs. Ability to align staff and volunteers with the Club values.

Working Conditions

  • Office-based position, with remote work possible through the offseason
  • Full time, year-round position
  • Some evenings and weekends will be required, especially through the summer months
  • Flexible office hours to offset evenings and weekends


Compensation and Benefits

Salary will be commensurate with experience within the current job market. A competitive benefits package will also be included.

Club Awards Nominations

As we wrap up our 2023 summer soccer season, we are reaching out to our members to seek nominations for our Major Club Awards, to recognize the hard work, dedication and achievements of our Players, Coaches, and Volunteers. 

As such, please see the nomination form found here and take a minute or two to nominate those who you feel deserve recognition. You may nominate in any or all categories, but please provide us with justification/reasoning for your choices in the space provided. Please submit a separate form for each nomination.

Matt Sloan Memorial Bursary

Beginning in 2012, the FDSA Board of Directors has agreed to present an annual award in memory of Matt Sloan, former FDSA athlete and staff member. The bursary will be presented to a graduating FDSA member who best represents the ideals of an unsung hero and who exemplifies the development of the person through sport.

Criteria:
• Applicant must be a grade 12 graduate in 2023 OR a grade 12 student in 2023-2024
• Applicant must be pursuing post-secondary studies in 2023 or 2024
• Applicant must be a soccer player in the 2023 season
• Applicant must be a member of FDSA in the 2023 season
• Applicant must have demonstrated the ideals of an unsung hero through their sport involvement

Application Process:
• Applicants must submit a 250-word essay to the FDSA Selection Committee describing their personal development through the sport of soccer.
• Applications must also include ONE letter of reference with regard to the applicant’s demonstration of the ideals of an unsung hero through their school / community sport involvement.

Both of these documents should be emailed to mdonahuewies@fdsa.org with the subject line “Matt Sloan Memorial Bursary Application”. Deadline for submission is September 29th 2023.

Good luck to our U13 teams who will be representing the FDSA at Provincials! The Capitals and Galleons will be representing the girls and the Athletics will be representing the boys!
