The 2008 season is shaping up to be the best yet! Youth soccer is one of the fastest growing sports in Canada and the FDSA is eager to help foster the development of grass roots players in the Fredericton area. The FDSA looks forward to a season of fun, friendship and fair-play. Based on the 2007 year end survey some minor changes to the programs will be implemented this year.
-
The Youth Recreational Kickoff Tournament will be held one week later to avoid any interference with year end exams for our youth players.
-
The Year End Jamboree will remain status quo for this season.
-
The drafting of the teams will be simplified this year. The teams will be selected by the FDSA staff using the player ratings collected at the end of last year’s season. The players will be assigned to teams based on their skill level and each team will receive an equal amount of players at each skill level to ensure balanced teams. A small evaluation session will be held for players who do not have a current rating.

12U Boys and Girls (for those born in 1996 or 1997)
The FDSA will retain the 7v7 format for the 12U league which was implemented in the 2005 season by Soccer NB in order to promote more touches on the ball. Due to the closure of fields at Waterloo Row, all games will be played on the UNB artificial turf.
14U Co-Ed (for those born in 1994 or 1995)
The 14U league will remain Co-Ed for the 2008 season. The primary advantage of this format is the ability to offer a league with a larger variety of teams, as opposed to two gender specific leagues. The number of teams has grown every year which is a testimony to its success.
16/18U Co-Ed (for those born in 1991 or 1992-16U; 1989 or 1990-18U)
This league will again remain Co-Ed for the 2008 season. Teams from other clubs will again be invited to join the FDSA.
FDSA YOUTH PLAYER RATING AND TEAM ASSIGNMENT
Since all 2007 FDSA players in the youth program have been rated by their coaches on a scale of 1-3 (1 = more skilled players), the skill evaluation portion of the draft for the 2008 season will only consist of players who did not play during the 2007 season. The skills will be evaluated during modified games on Monday and Tuesday evenings, May 26th and 27th. These modified games will be held for each age division and gender (12UG; 12UB; 14U Co-Ed and 16/18U Co-ed). The skill rating of these players will be determined by the coaches within each division, led by a facilitator. These ratings and the 2007 ratings will be used to assign all players to teams for the 2008 season.
The team assignments will be conducted by the Youth Director and the FDSA staff on Thursday, May 29th. The team list will then be e-mailed to coaches on Friday May 30th so all players can be contacted for the start of the season. There will not be an actual “draft” this year. Prior to the start of the season, each team will be allowed one player trade. The trade must involve two (2) players of equivalent rating. All trades will need to be approved by the Youth Director prior to the start of the season.
Protected Players
i) Only the Coach, Assistant Coach and one helper (manager) son/daughter are to be protected. Therefore, a maximum of 3 players can be protected per team.
ii) Siblings will be protected.
iii) Only in extreme circumstances will the Executive Director in consultation with the Director of Youth, make a decision of protecting a player.
iv) There will be no special requests.
