Green Kicks

The Fredericton District Soccer Association is a big organization with an even bigger impact on the community. Though the FDSA is large organization, our impact on the environment does not have to be. That’s why we have launched Green Kicks, our action plan to become one of the most environmentally friendly sport organizations in Canada.

What’s Up?
Everyone seems to be talking about climate change, the Kyoto accord, and our environment. Whether the debate is in the House of Commons or at the coffee shop, our environment is a highly contentious issue. There are skeptics, and there are believers.
Nonetheless, there is increasing consensus that the climate is indeed changing. The evidence is unequivocal:

  • Malaria has spread to higher altitudes as a result of progressive temperature elevations to such places as the Columbian Andes, 7000 feet above sea level.
  • The number of Category 4 & 5 hurricanes has almost doubled in the last 30 years.
  • Glacial ice flow has doubled over the past ten years.
  • At least 300 species of plants and animals are already responding to global warming, moving closer to the poles.

We are approaching a tipping point where our Earth as a living system can no longer cope with the over consumption of humanity.

This issue seems to be far from home, but it is closer than you might think. The climate change problem directly impacts us as a soccer community.

Our Health & Our Sport
Our physical wellness relies on such things as exercise, good nutrition, and adequate rest, and the FDSA works hard to promote physical wellness. However, sometimes we forget that a clean environment with a stable climate is what sustains our health.

Climate change will adversely affect the health of our children, and if measures are not taken now then the consequences will be perilous.

This is our community, one we must protect.
It is no longer enough to just think green, but it is time to act! As individuals we can make small changes in our every day lifestyle to fight climate change. Together we can make a difference as a large sport organization, it all adds up.

Browse our Green Kicks pages, and find out what you can do to make the FDSA the first GREEN soccer club in Canada. Keep an eye out for our special events where we will have prizes for those members who demonstrate strong efforts toward fighting climate change.
