- Walk, bike, stroll or roll, but leave the
vehicle at home. The city of Fredericton
has an integrated trails system that makes this easy.
Research has shown that for any distance less than
5km in the city environment, biking is actually faster
than driving.

fields.
- If you can’t be #1, at least be #2.
If you have young children or live a considerable
distance from the field, active transportation such
as biking or walking may not be viable. Check
the public transit schedule
and bus to the fields. Or, network with other
parents on your child’s team to determine carpooling
options. Reduce emissions, and reduce congestion,
start using public transit and start carpooling.
- Say no to bottled water. Though
it tastes better than the chlorinated city water,
bottled water is not environmentally friendly. An
enormous amount of energy is wasted in bottled water
production and transportation (Most bottled water
comes from hundreds of kilometers away). Fill up your
own reusable water bottle and help the environment!
- If you’re a snacker, be a smart packer.
If you like to pack a snack for you or for the team,
be sure to pack smart! Do not use disposable packaging,
but use reusable containers instead. If you must use
snack products that come in packaging, be sure it
is minimal and recyclable.
- Swat litterbugs. Not only is trash
unsightly, but it also disturbs local ecology, and
attracts pests. Whether you’re on the home field
or away, treat the soccer field like your backyard.
Properly dispose of refuse by trashing it, recycling
it, or bring it back to your home compost.
Do yourself a favour and do your part to
help the FDSA become the most environmentally friendly
sport association in Canada.
